Detecting Termites

Termites can be detected through regular property inspections in accordance with AS3660.2 and by routinely checking existing termite monitoring systems. A termite inspection includes a thorough examination of all timbers within the interior and exterior of the property, as well as any outbuildings and the perimetre of existing roof and subfloor spaces. In some cases, moisture metres and microwave devices (Termetrac) may be used to detect moisture and termite movement within concealed wall, roof, and floor cavities.

Reducing the Risk of Termites

To minimise the risk of termite damage to your property, implement recommendations provided by the technician in the termite inspection report. This may include non-chemical advice on reducing moisture sources, improving ventilation, removing stored timbers from beneath structures, and improving access to concealed areas, among other site-specific recommendations.

Pro-Active Termite Monitoring Systems

Termite monitoring systems involve the installation of in-ground stations around the perimetre of structures on your property. These stations contain highly attractive timber inserts designed to attract termites for detection during regular inspections. By intercepting termites in the ground surrounding the building, the risk of timber damage within the structure may be reduced. Termite monitoring stations must be inspected at least every three months for termite presence. If termites are detected, a termite bait is added to the station, which, once consumed in sufficient quantity, will result in the elimination of the termite colony. After a 12-month contract, the timber strips within the station must be replaced to ensure they remain attractive to termites.

Importance of Termite Monitoring Systems

Installing a termite monitoring system is crucial for increasing the chances of preventing termite damage to building timbers through early detection and treatment within the stations during regular monitoring.

Who Needs a Termite Monitoring System

Termite monitoring systems can be installed around any building, regardless of whether there is an active termite infestation, as their purpose is to help detect and control future termite attacks on the property.

P2K Termite Monitoring System Process

Pest2Kill uses the Exterra termite interception and baiting system, as it offers the best-designed stations and most palatable bait. Where soil exists around the building, plastic stations are dug into the ground to sit flush with the soil level. If concrete or paving surrounds the building, a concrete cutter is used to create core holes through the concrete until the ground beneath is reached. Timber interceptors are then placed within these core holes, along with a removable stainless steel cap for regular inspections. Stations are generally placed 3-5 metres apart around the perimetre of the structures being protected.

Inspecting the Termite Monitoring System

Timbers within termite monitoring stations are replaced annually and monitored throughout the year. If new termite colonies begin foraging for timbers on the property, there is a high chance they will attack the attractive timbers within the stations and be detected during regular inspections.

Termite Monitoring System Guarantee

As long as termites consume the bait, the termite colony nest will be eliminated. However, in rare situations, termites may recede from active sites or the entire site due to various factors, including disturbance or treatment of the same termite colony on another property. While the placement and regular monitoring of stations around the property significantly increase the chance of early detection, there is no guarantee that termites will find and attack the timbers within the stations.

What to Do If You Notice Termites

If you observe any damage or deviations in timber surfaces or mud protruding through gaps around interior timber joinery or gyprock, it may indicate an active termite colony attacking timbers on your property. You may also notice small, pale creatures beneath and around timbers in your yard while gardening. In either case, avoid disturbing the site further and contact Pest2Kill immediately to arrange a property inspection and initiate a treatment program if necessary. Excessive disturbance may cause termites to recede from the area, reducing available baiting sites and increasing the difficulty of eliminating the termite colony. Do not spray termites with insect spray, as this will only kill termites at that location and have no overall effect on the termite colony.

Eradicating Termites

Termite eradication must always be based on treating the actual termite colony nest, which is often not located at the site where termites are found. Using a termite bait is the most effective way to ensure the entire termite colony is eliminated, reducing the risk of further timber damage on your property.

Termite Treatment Process

Termite treatments are necessary when active termite colonies of economically significant species are found attacking timbers on a property. Termite treatments may involve the direct application of a termiticide or removal of a termite colony nest if found. However, in most cases, the actual nest causing timber damage will not be located, and indirect treatment methods will need to be employed.

Importance of Termite Treatment

It is essential to treat termite colonies using termite bait once they have begun attacking timbers on a property. This ensures the termite colony is eliminated, preventing further damage to structural timbers.

Who Needs Termite Treatment

Any property where economically significant termites are found attacking timbers on the site should have their termites treated.

P2K Termite Treatment Process

Pest2Kill believes that the most efficient way to eliminate a termite colony nest is by applying termite bait to active feeding sites over several months. Termite bait is a highly palatable matrix of cellulose (what termites seek when attacking timbers) with a small amount of non-detectable termiticide. This active ingredient is a chitin synthesis inhibitor, which prevents termites from producing their exoskeleton. As a result, when it is time for workers and nymphs to molt, they are unable to do so and die. The baiting process can take anywhere from 2-12 months, depending on the species. While this may seem like a long time, it is crucial for the termite bait to be distributed throughout the entire colony.

What Happens if Termites Return

If termites return after a colony has been eliminated, it indicates that the infestation has originated from a new termite colony. Although rare, this can occur when termite feeding sites are abandoned following the death of one colony, and another species or a new colony of the same species takes over the existing galleries to begin feeding at the baiting or other sites. In this case, the baiting process will be initiated again for the new termite colony.
